It's a level indicator that you get to increase when you eliminate opponents or acquire experience piece items.
For every star level up, HP and Armor are recovered fully and you can select one of three skills for enhancement.

The star level is used only during a battle and is reset to 0 when the character is dead.

Please note that level ups through acquirement of figures and Gold are separate and different from the star level.
